You will be pleased to know that the average daily temperature is 27 degrees Celsius or 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This allows you to lay on the beach any day of the year and the ocean is warm enough to swim in year round as well, although locals tend not to swim from December until February. It also seems like we have sunny days with blue sky all the time here except when we get a rain storm.
Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall… It can rain anytime in the Riviera Maya, but rain in the forecast often means a passing shower that lasts just a few minutes, or it might rain in Playa del Carmen, but be sunny in Puerto Morelos.
The old saying “it is not so much the heat, it is the humidity” comes into play here. We are in the tropics and the humidity levels are often very high. This can make it feel even hotter. This is not a problem if you are by the beach all day or swimming in the ocean but remember outside of these two places it can feel very warm. Drink lots of liquids, wear light clothes and plan your day around the hottest times.
Yes we live in the Caribbean and there are hurricanes. We don’t get as many as you might expect and the nice thing about those storms is that it’s very rare for a hurricane to strike completely by surprise, so You’ll have advance warning and time to prepare if a hurricane is approaching. The truth is, there is not too much to worry about due to the preparedness of the area and the infrequent event of a hurricane. We on average have a bad hurricane every 10 years and often we often don’t have any hurricanes for several years straight. If you are here on vacation and one approaches, the worst thing that can happen is you have to cut your vacation short or move to another area while the storm passes.
If you do get caught in a hurricane while you’re in Puerto Morelos, remember that there are protocols in place to keep you safe, the military, police, and various levels of government are VERY organized and well-planned. And we will at the best of our abilities try to get you a flight out or move you to a safer location away from the ocean. However, the chances that a hurricane will hit during your vacation are very low.
No matter what the weather is like during your trip, remember that you are on vacation. You can relax and you don’t have to go to work, so enjoy yourself, and if you don’t like the weather, don’t worry, wait five minutes and it will probably change!
